McCain is on record as saying, “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should," and then added assuringly, "I’ve got Greenspan’s book.”
Given the magnitude of a global economic slowdown and a struggling US economy (unemployment 6.1%, federal bailouts of financial institutions, etc), it seems this would be an untenable position for a national politician to take. And yet, there it is.
In terms of the role of the economy in the voting behavior of the public, the Wall Street Journal suggests that Obama may have the edge over McCain.
